Bougainville was occupied by Japanese troops in mid-1942 and was intended to form an important forward outpost of the Japanese Empire.

Khasab was built by the Portuguese at the beginning of the 17th century, at the height of their naval presence in the region. Unlike many forts that were built on high ground for defensive purposes, Khasab was designed as a supply point for dates and water for Portuguese ships sailing through the strait.

It essentially comprises two parts, north and south of the Great Bitter Lake that acts as a buffer to the canal, protecting it from the effects of tidal currents. A second parallel canal is planned for 2017/2019, at a cost of US$4 billion.
